Street Furniture for Kids
Three young 20-somethings running a new day-care centre find an innovative and locally owned design and manufacture company to equip their new centre. Find out how street furniture had a real positive impact.
The play centre that myself and my two girlfriends run is a fun, safe and educational place fit for any growing youngster. From the beginning we had a passion to give the young ones within our neighbourhood what we thought was severely lacking; a commitment to young minds.
When we had a small open day a few weeks before the play centre opened, we heard through some members of the local community about a local company that specialised in creating bike shelters, parent waiting shelters and Street Furniture. We had been on the lookout for fun outdoor furniture set suitable for toddlers and young ones so we called them up.
They were very professional and had an excellent range of street furniture - ideal for what we wanted. The only problem was clearly going to be spending too much - we wanted it all!
We knew that whatever we bought it firstly had to be safe, i.e. no sharp edges and secondly it had to be bright and colourful, in-keeping with the rest of the centre. With that in mind it was easy to choose from their wide range of rubbish bins. The Boldon Street Litter Bin, in a lemon yellow was what we went for. To match it we got the Boldon Steel Bench, perfect for parents to use while waiting for their kids to gather their things.
The last purchase we made is by far our favourite and a year on it has been proven to be a favourite with the children too. The Jigsaw Picnic Tables that we purchased, seat 4 and are an incredibly quirky and amusing addition to the playground.
This innovative use of Street Furniture has not only brightened up our outdoor space, it has made it very usable too. When it's sunny we can have classes outside, and the kids love that. Before we started this project I gave very little thought to Street Furniture - now I can see its applications and possibilities everywhere!
Conclusion
We have been incredibly lucky to source street furniture right here in our town in Newcastle. What's more the products we have purchased for our centre has been excellent value for money and been incredibly easy to maintain.
