Street Furniture

Recent research has shown that bollards, street furniture, barriers, public open spaces, parks and local architecture can evoke powerful emotions in local communities. Urban designers and street scene planners should take this into account when designing programmes to enhance towns and cities with diverse communities within the area.

Research was carried out across 4 major cities, each having their own underlying tensions and social history. It was found that tensions between different social groups, whether it is religious, political or ethnic, can have a significant impact on the urban landscape, and vice versa.

It isn't meant that urban designs and landscapes prevent or cause these positions, but some urban design features were identified as playing a part in both reducing divisions and increasing tensions within the community.

Dr. Brand said "It's essential to take these factors into account, but good urban design and architecture should not be overlooked. A better built environment will not in itself make problems disappear, but it should be part of community action plans."

Bollards are often installed to protect vulnerable facilities and used as demarcation of public spaces. Whilst this gives security to the community it can also create a disturbing atmosphere, does it show a community that offers safety and security or one that needs high security because of local tensions?

Recently architects and urban designers have been trying to hide such measures by ensuring suitable materials are used to add to the design of the community. Street furniture, including bollards, cycle stands, seating, planters and railings is available in a variety of materials. Galvanised mild steel, powder coated, stainless steel, timber and cast iron are all used, each offering its own unique properties allowing the designers to compliment the communities urban design.

If the town or city has a strong Victorian history and heritage then cast iron products meet the criteria, a more cosmopolitan city may opt for the stainless steel street furniture range as this gives a contemporary design to the urban planning. Areas of more industrial development will suit a harder mild steel range, which can still be elevated with powder coating to any RAL colour.

It is imperative that urban design takes into account social enhancement and cohesion, the layout of seating within public spaces, providing cycle stands to towns and cities, choosing the correct materials are all part of bringing the community together. Whilst street furniture will not resolve social tensions and division it will go a step towards community enhancement and bringing people together which ultimately will break down barriers in our future.
